History of the Grand Union Flag
Although it was short-lived, the Grand Union Flag was technically the first "official" flag of the United States. It was adopted by the English colonies on December 3, 1775 and relinquished 18 months later in June of 1777, less than a year after the then English colonies declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain on July 4th, 1776.
This flag was never fully official as the United States flag as the country would not have their independence fully solidified with the surrender of the British forces on September 3, 1783.
In order to solidify their own independence in flags, other designs were created that removed the British Union Jack of the time.
