Header & Grommets vs. Pole Hem: What’s the Difference?

When choosing a flag, one of the most important details to consider is how the flag is finished. Two of the most common finishing options are Header & Grommets and Pole Hem. While both serve the purpose of securing your flag for display, each is designed for different applications. Understanding the difference can help ensure you choose the right option for your specific needs.

Header & Grommets

A header is a heavy-duty canvas strip sewn along the hoist side (the side closest to the pole) of the flag. Metal grommets—typically two or three depending on the flag size—are inserted into the header for easy attachment.

Best For:

  • Traditional outdoor flagpoles
  • Residential and commercial flag displays
  • Flags flown with a rope and clip system (halyard)

Benefits:

  • Strong and durable for outdoor use
  • Allows the flag to move freely in the wind
  • Easy to install or replace
  • Standard choice for most exterior flagpoles

If you’re flying your flag on a traditional flagpole, Header & Grommets is usually the best option for long-lasting performance.

Pole Hem

A pole hem is a sewn sleeve or pocket along the hoist side of the flag. Instead of clips or hardware, the pole slides directly through the hem to hold the flag in place.

Best For:

  • Wall-mounted flag brackets
  • Parade poles
  • Indoor flag displays
  • Handheld and decorative flags

Benefits:

  • Clean, polished appearance
  • No visible hardware
  • Secure fit on stationary poles
  • Ideal for indoor or low-wind applications

If your flag will be displayed on a stationary pole, indoors, or in a decorative setting, a Pole Hem may be the perfect choice.

Which Option Is Right for You?

If you have a traditional outdoor flagpole with a rope and clips, Header & Grommets is likely your best choice. If your flag will slide onto a pole for indoor display, parade use, or decorative mounting, Pole Hem is the way to go.
